At least 25 houses were gutted in a fire that broke out in Tongi, Gazipur, early on Wednesday, leaving dozens of families homeless and causing losses estimated at around Tk 10 lakh.

The fire erupted in the Mudafah (West Para) area of Tongi at around 6:30am. Three units of the Fire Service rushed to the scene and brought the blaze under control by 7:30am after nearly an hour of firefighting efforts.

Senior Station Officer of Tongi Fire Service Shahin Alam said local residents first noticed flames and smoke rising from a house in the area. The fire quickly spread to neighbouring homes before firefighters arrived.

“Upon receiving the information, three units from Tongi Fire Service responded immediately and managed to bring the fire under control within an hour,” he said.

No casualties or injuries were reported.

According to fire service officials, around 30 houses located on the same premises were affected, with household belongings and furniture either destroyed or severely damaged. The exact cause of the fire and the total extent of the losses have yet to be determined.

However, officials suspect the blaze may have originated from an electrical short circuit.

Residents said the prompt response of firefighters prevented the fire from spreading further and averted a larger disaster. They estimated that at least 25 houses were completely destroyed, along with furniture and other valuables, resulting in losses of about Tk 10 lakh.

The affected families have called on the authorities to provide compensation and rehabilitation support to help them rebuild their lives.
