20km traffic jam on Dhaka-Chittagong highway causes major disruption

A severe traffic jam spanning nearly 20 kilometres has formed on the Narayanganj section of the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, causing extreme distress for travellers.

The congestion began on Wednesday morning, stretching from Signboard in Siddhirganj past Langalbandh.

Kanchpur highway police station Officer-in-Charge Rezaul Haque said police were working to manage the situation. The random entry of various vehicles, including relief trucks, was exacerbating the problem, he added.

Numerous vehicles were stuck on both sides of the road in the Madanpur area.

Locals said the traffic jam had persisted since morning, although the cause remained unclear.

Sagir Mia, a bus passenger, said he had not seen such a traffic jam recently. “The bus is not moving at all."

A CNG-run autorickshaw driver, Dabir Hossain, said it would take over two hours to travel from Madanpur to Kachpur in such congestion, so he was taking detours through local roads instead of staying on the highway.
