Teacher files complaint over crude bomb attacks on CU campus

A complaint has been lodged regarding the detonation of crude bombs in front of the residences of two Chittagong University teachers.

One of these teachers, actively supporting the students' quota reform movement, has submitted a written complaint to the vice-chancellor, deputy vice-chancellor, registrar, proctor and teachers’ association.

Chittagong University's Associate Professor of Philosophy Mohammad Mozammel Haque on Wednesday complained in writing that he and his family are experiencing significant insecurity following the crude bomb explosions outside his campus residence at midnight.

According to the complaint, around 2am on Wednesday, around 16-17 youths arrived on 6-7 motorcycles in front of Mozammel's house. They stayed for seven to eight minutes, hurling verbal abuse and then detonating three crude bombs before fleeing. Witnesses, including the house's watchman and neighbours, confirmed the incident.

Mozammel said: "I have informed the vice-chancellor and the proctor about the entire incident. I hope the authorities will take action. However, the proctor mentioned that the CCTV camera was not functioning properly due to network issues. Yet, I observed the CCTV camera in front of my house was operating normally."

He added: "I saw a police patrolling vehicle pass by right after the incident. It was the duty of the police to identify and question those roaming around on motorcycles late at night in this closed campus and those responsible for the crude bomb attack. In my 30 years at the university, I have never seen anything like this."

Similarly, a similar incident was held at the residence of Professor Dr Md Atiar Rahman of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Atiar said: "Several youths on seven or eight motorcycles came to my house in Paharika Housing Society on campus and banged on the door around 2:30am. They used my name and abused me in the local dialect. Later, they detonated three crude bombs and left."

When asked about the incidents, CU Proctor Dr Md Wahidul Alam said: "Professor Mozammel has filed a written complaint about the incident. We are investigating the matter with the police. However, during our visit to his house, we found no evidence of an explosion. Additionally, the lack of internet at that time prevented us from reviewing the CCTV footage. Police have been instructed to question anyone found roaming on campus."
