Six killed by lightning strikes in Naogaon, Chapainawabganj

At least six people were killed by lightning strikes in separate incidents in Naogaon and Chapainawabganj on Friday.

In Naogaon, three people were killed in Patnitala and Manda upazilas on Friday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Khademul Islam, 55, resident of Patnitala upazila, Monika Khatun, 34, of the same upazila and Shamsul Alam, 34, resident of Manda upazila.

Quoting locals, Patnitala police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mozaffar Hossain said Monika Khatun was struck by lightning when she was bringing her cow back home from a field.

Khademul Islam was struck by lightning while he tried to escape the rain by standing under a tree.

Manda police station OC Mozammel Haque Kazi said that Shamsul Alam was hit by a lightning strike when he was working in a field in the afternoon. He died on the way to the hospital.

In Chapainawabganj, three persons including two children were killed by lightning strikes on Friday.

The deceased have been identified as Boby Bhokot, 32, Kabita Khatun, 11, and Amena Khatun, 10.

OC of Shibganj police station Md Sajjad Hossain said Boby Bhokot was hit by lightning strike as she was sitting in front of her house at around 2pm. She died on the spot, reports BSS.

Kabita died after being struck by lightning as she went to take water from a tube well behind her house at 3pm.

Amena Khatun died after being struck by lightning when she was collecting mangoes in the rain at a nearby orchard at around 2:45 pm .

She was rushed to Bholahat Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared her dead.

Lightning strikes are commonplace during thundershowers and kill several hundred people -- mostly farmers working under the open sky -- every year in Bangladesh.

Scientists say there is a correlation between lightning strikes and temperature. From April to July, the temperature remains humid and warm, leading to an increase in such incidents. These are the most powerful in the afternoon.
