As Cyclone Remal approaches, residents in Mongla's coastal areas are seeking refuge in 103 cyclone shelters.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has instructed Mongla and Payra ports to hoist a danger signal no 10.
The authorities at Mongla Port have declared Alert-4.
Operations for loading and unloading goods on ships at Mongla Port are currently suspended. Additionally, six commercial ships have been anchored at the port to avoid accidents during the storm.
Meanwhile, due to the effects of Cyclone Remal, it started raining around 12pm on Sunday, accompanied by gusty winds.
Mongla Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nishat Tamanna said: "Everything is being done to bring the coastal residents, especially those living near the Sundarbans and along the Pasur River, to shelters. Many have already been brought in, and adequate food supplies have been arranged for them. Efforts are ongoing to bring in those who have not yet reached the shelters. Additionally, an awareness campaign through loudspeakers will continue along the Sundarbans-adjacent coast."
Residents of Chila union in Mongla upazila are at the highest risk. They live close to the Sundarbans.
Gazi Akbar Hossen, chairman of the union, said: "Nearly all of the 25 shelters in my union are bringing in coastal residents. We have arranged dry food for them."
Mongla Coast Guard Western Zone Media Officer Lt Md Muntasir Ibn Mohsin said they have been alert since Saturday for the cyclone's impact.
An awareness campaign continues to keep the coastal residents informed every moment. Since Sunday morning, their members have been stationed along the Pasur River and near the Sundarbans area, ready to handle any situation.
