The police have detained a youth for helping pedestrians cross a road divider in the middle of the Dhaka-Chittagong highway with ladders on both sides for Tk5 each.
Kanchpur highway police apprehended Md Rabiul, 26, on Sunday night.
Traffic Inspector AKM Sharfuddin said a case will be filed against Rabiul.
A video of Rabiul assisting people cross the divider went viral earlier, prompting criticism on social media.
The incident was taking place in front of the Roads and Highways Department office at the Shimrail intersection of Narayanganj on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.
In the clip, ladders are seen leaning against either side of the road divider, with pedestrians crossing the highway by using them. A young man is also seen taking money in return.
According to locals, the young man would take Tk5 to help pedestrians cross the divider on ladders.
In the middle of last year, the four-lane Dhaka-bound road from Kanchpur Bridge in Siddhirganj to the Kuwait Plaza area was divided into two lanes with a high divider so that long-route vehicles could go directly to Dhaka.
Also, two more lanes were kept for local vehicles. Until now, a gate was kept open in front of the Roads and Highway Department office for the movement of passengers from the long-distance lane to the local lane.
Long-route vehicles used to drop passengers off at the Shimrail intersection. But the authorities have kept it closed for two months.
Long-route vehicles are still dropping passengers at the spot. Passengers are often crossing the road at risk. Some unscrupulous transport workers are using ladders on both sides of the divider to help them cross it in exchange for money.
Traffic Inspector AKM Sharfuddin said earlier in the day the Highway Police went to the spot and seized the ladder. But the young man was not found. Operations are on to nab him.
The Roads and Highways Department has been informed about this. They will put a barbed wire fence there. Apart from this, 40 bus transports are dropping passengers off at that place, a case has been filed against them, he added.
Roads and Highways Department Executive Engineer Shahana Ferdous could not be reached for comment.
