Awami League candidate supporters accused of torturing activists supporting rival

Two Jubo League leaders, working for an independent candidate for Natore-4 constituency Asif Abdullah Shovon, were allegedly assaulted with hammers by supporters of his rival, who is the ruling Awami League's official candidate in the constituency.

The candidate was nominated by Awami League in Natore’s Gurudaspur upazila.

The injured were identified as Shariful Islam and Sirajul Islam. They are both Jubo League activists.

Among the injured, Shariful was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

Ujjal Hossain, officer-in-charge of Gurudaspur police station, said Shariful, general secretary of Nazirpur union Juba League and other Jubo League leader, Sirajul were working for independent candidate Asif Abdullah Shovon of Natore-4 constituency.

Being enraged, supporters of Awami League candidate for the constituency Siddiqur Rahman Patwari, attacked Shariful and Sirajul at Nazirpur Godown intersection around 7pm on Tuesday, said OC Ujjal.

Efforts underway to nab the perpetrators, the OC said.

Meanwhile, Awami League’s candidate for Natore-4 constituency Siddiqur Rahman Patwary has denied allegations against his supporters.

“My supporters can do no such thing,” Patwary told UNB.
