A clash broke out between two factions of the Chittagong unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League at an eatery inside the campus on Friday.
The clash took place at 3pm involving two factions known as “Bijoy” and “Sixty-Nine”.
No casualties were reported from the incident when bricks were pelted at each other. Some of the students were seen holding sharp weapons while wearing helmets.
According to campus sources, the Bijoy group primarily comprises followers of Sakhawat Hossain, a leader of the CU unit Chhatra League.
Members of the Sixty-Nine group align themselves with Saidul Islam Sayeed, the former joint general secretary of the unit.
The conflict began when a Bijoy group member visited “Nazrul Bhai's restaurant” and encountered an incident where cooked lentils were spilled by Ajmir, an activist from the opposing group, said Siam, a supporter of the Bijoy faction.
Aqib Javed, a follower of the other group, recounted that their group faced “impolite behaviour” from the rivals while dining at the restaurant.
Members of both groups said they were actively working to find a resolution amongst themselves.
Proctor Dr Mohammad Nurul Azim Sikder said: “The proctorial body and the police promptly intervened, putting an end to the clash. No injuries have been reported thus far. Appropriate legal action will be taken against those involved.”
