Zayeda Khatun on Monday took charge as the first female mayor of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC).
After assuming her role as mayor, she said: "We will build a planned city with everyone, including all the councillors."
Former mayor Zahangir Alam, Zayeda's son, sought prayers and good wishes for his mother.
On May 26, Zayeda Khatun, an independent candidate and mother of former mayor Jahangir Alam, triumphed in the mayoral race of the GCC.
Zayeda Khatun bagged 238,934 while Awami League-nominated Azmat Ullah got 222,737 in the close-fought election.
Zayeda Khatun was originally not in contention, but the 70-year-old entered the race when her son learned that he would not get the party ticket. Zayeda Khatun's strength was in the development work her son undertook when he was mayor.
