3 remanded in Gaibandha over theft of 11,500 textbooks

A Gaibandha court on Thursday placed three people on a two-day remand in a case filed for their alleged involvement in stealing 11,500 textbooks of the secondary level.

Judge Mehedi Hasan of Gaibandha cognizance court passed the order after hearing a petition seeking a seven-day remand in the case, said Md Mukhlesur Rahman, officer-in-charge of district DB police, also investigating officer of the case.

The three accused will be grilled on Friday or Saturday, said the police official.

The three are Majedur Rahman Majed, 45, office assistant at the secondary education office of Sundarganj upazila, truck driver Shyamal Mia, 34, and his brother, helper Russell Mia, 30.

The truck loaded with the books, worth Tk5 lakh, was seized by a team of police of Jamuna Bridge West police station on Sunday.

The textbooks for students of 6th to 9th grades for the 2023 academic year were stored at Sundarganj DW Government College for free distribution. 

Police intercepted the truck full of books from Sundarganj on its way to Dhaka around 10pm on Sunday.

During interrogation, truck driver Shyamal and his brother Russell informed about the purchase of the books from Office Assistant Majedur Rahman in exchange for money. 

Following their information, police arrested the Majedur.

Later, Sundarganj Upazila Secondary Education Officer Mahmud Hossain Mandal filed the case at Sundarganj police station on Monday.
