A Rajbari court on Wednesday ordered to send Sonia Akhter Smriti to jail for spreading rumours about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on social media.
Rajbari Sadar police station OC Shahadat Hossain said Smriti sought for bail which the court rejected.
In a raid in the early hours of Wednesday, the law enforcement agency arrested Sonia Akhter Smriti at her home in Beradanga under Rajbari municipality.
Sonia Akhter Smriti is the founder of the voluntary organization Rajbari Blood Donors Club.
According to the police, Shamsul Arefin Chowdhury, science and technology affairs secretary of the ruling Awami League’s Mijanpur union unit, filed a case against Smriti at Rajbari Sadar police station.
According to the case statement, Smriti made false and defamatory statements on social media on August 31 to tarnish the prime minister's reputation. Smriti went live on Facebook before her arrest and was heard talking to policemen.
