Kushtia doctor assaulted following patient's death in OT

A doctor in Kushtia's Ad-Din Hospital was physically assaulted following the death of a female patient in the operation theatre due to alleged wrong treatment on Monday.

The deceased, Firoza Khatun, 45, was the wife of Ayub Ali from the GK Puratan Balughat area of Kushtia city.

According to police and local sources, Firoza Khatun was admitted to Ad-Din Hospital on Sunday for a gallbladder stone operation.

Her condition became critical due to a sudden rise in blood pressure during the surgery on Monday.

Consequently, the hospital authorities referred her to another private hospital, but she died en route.

Upon receiving the news of Khatun's death, her relatives allegedly assaulted Amirul Islam.

The situation was later brought under control by the police.

Khatun's son, Onik Ahmed, said that his mother was taken into the operating room in stable condition.

“While I was out buying medical supplies, I was informed that my mother had become unconscious, and the operation could not proceed. My mother died shortly after that,” Onik added.

Abdul Kader, the acting manager of Ad-Din Hospital in Kushtia, defended the surgeon, Amirul Islam, a retired assistant professor of Kushtia Medical College, stating that he was experienced and not at fault.

Kader suggested that Khatun had died from a heart attack, not due to any medical negligence.

However, attempts to contact the accused doctor, Amirul Islam, were unsuccessful as his mobile phone was switched off.

Kushtia model police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Jahangir Selim confirmed that police intervened to control the situation after receiving the news.

However, no action has been taken since no formal complaint was lodged.

Jahangir Selim assured that if the deceased's family files a complaint, appropriate actions will be taken.

Kushtia Civil Surgeon Dr AHM Anwarul Islam also expressed his awareness of the incident, asserting that if any complaint is received, an investigation will be conducted and necessary actions will be taken.
