Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling Awami League, has formed a panel to probe into the ragging of a student of Islamic University, Kushtia.
The university authorities also formed a five-member investigation committee earlier on Wednesday over the ragging allegedly by a leader and some activists of Chhatra League.
The committee, headed by IU law department chair Prof Reba Mondolat, was formed in a meeting with IU Vice Chancellor Prof Shaikh Abdus Salam in the chair.
The development came after two students, Fulpori Khatun of the finance and banking department and Shanjida Chowdhury Ontora of the statistics department, submitted complaints against each other.
Many female students of the Deshratno Sheikh Hasina Hall of the university said ragging by Ontora and her cohorts often happened at the hall but the incidents did not come to light as they threatened and intimidated the victims not to disclose the matter.
The university administration should take legal action against the accused so that they would not dare to commit such heinous acts in the future, they said.
Fulpori Khatun, a first-year student at the university, was reportedly tortured and harassed by IU Chhatra League Vice President Shanjida Chowdhury Ontora and her associates at Deshratno Sheikh Hasina Hall on Sunday night.
The incident surfaced after the victim left the hall and disclosed the matter to her seniors and her family members on Monday.
The victim on Tuesday submitted a complaint to the university proctor, student adviser and the hall provost, demanding punishment for those involved in the incident.
IU Chhatra League President Faisal Siddiki said: “We demand a fair investigation into the incident and punishment of those involved. If Chhatra League [members] are involved, organizational measures will be taken.”
