Police arrested a Union Parishad (UP) member on Thursday for reportedly raping a 16 year old girl in Sylhet. He also filmed her when two of his associates, yet unidentified, tried to rape her, police said.
The arrested has been identified as Shahbaz Ahmed, 38, member of ward 4 in Kandigaon union of Sylhet Sadar upazila, says a Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) press release.
The rape took place in a house in Lalbazar village under Sylhet's Dakshin Surma police station on Wednesday.
A case has been filed with Jalalabad police station by the girl's mother under the Women and Child Repression Prevention Act.
Police said Shabaz and two others abducted the girl from Tukerbazar under Jalalabad police station on Wednesday afternoon and took her to a house in Lalbazar village.
Shabaz first raped the girl and the two others attempted to rape her, when Shahbaz filmed the incident, according to police.
Jalalabad police station Officer-in-Charge Akil Uddin said the arrested would be produced in court on Friday. The teenage rape victim is undergoing treatment at the One-Stop Crisis Centre of the MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet.
