One dies as Bailey bridge collapses in Gaibandha, road communication disrupted

A truck driver was killed as his vehicle plunged into a waterbody, when the Bailey bridge through which it was moving collapsed in Gaibandha on Monday.

The Bailey bridge was a part of the Kalirbazar-Badiakhali road of Purba Chhalua area of the upazila. Road communication has been suspended between the Pulchhari upazila parishad office and five to six other unions after the collapse of the bridge.

The identity of the deceased truck driver is yet to be ascertained, confirmed Phulchhari police station Officer-in-Charge Kawsar Ali.

Police and local Fire Service rushed to the spot after the accident and sent the truck driver's assistant to the Phulchhari Upazila Health Complex as he was injured.

Sources from the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) said the bridge has collapsed due to overloading. The truck plying on it had been carrying 700 sacks of cement when it collapsed.

Imtiaz Ahmed Imu, engineer at the Gaibandha LGED, said the Bailey bridge was built in 2008 after the previous one broke due to flooding at the time.

In 2014, the bridge was repaired after being damaged by another series of floods.
