AL infighting in Narsingdi village leaves 2 dead

Two people were killed and at least eight others injured in a clash between two groups of ruling Awami League in Raipura, Narsingdi on Monday. According to police and local sources, Sirajul Haque, the Banshgari Union Parishad chairman and Awami Leage leader, had long been at loggerheads with former UP chairman and Awami League leader Hafizur Rahman Shahed over establishing supremacy in the area. On Monday afternoon, this enmity culminated in a showdown at Banshgari village among the followers of the two leaders using firearms and other locally-made weapons.

The clash left at least 10 people injured from gunshot wounds and stabs from fishing spears. Two among the injured – Jaynal Mian, 21, the son of Johir Mian from Banshgari village, and Arosh Ali, 23, the son of Sukkur Ali of the same village – were taken to Narsingdi District Hospital and Narsingdi Sadar Hospital where doctors declared them dead. The others are being treated at unknown locations to avoid getting arrested by police. Additional Superintendent of Police (Crimes) Shafiur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune that police had been deployed to Banshgari to avoid further troubles. On April 19, Sharfin Mian, 18, had died in a clash that took place at the same village. Following that incident, the upazila administration imposed Section 144 in the area for an indefinite period.
