A man whose wife is a rape survivor, was attacked hours after he took part in an anti-rape demonstration in Subarnachar upazila of Noakhali on Monday.
The incident took place in front of his house around 2:30am, his family said.
The acid attack victim, Nasir Uddin, of Char Bagga village in Subarnachar, was taken to Noakhali General Hospital where doctors said he had suffered 9% burns on his chest, hands, and a thigh.
He is currently undergoing treatment and is out of danger, said Dr Md Khalil Ullah, superintendent of the hospital.
Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, Nasir’s family members said a group of five or six people swooped down on Nasir when he stepped out of his house in the early hours of yesterday, and threw acid at him.
Nasir was able to recognize three or four of his attackers, they added.
They also said Nasir had been getting threats after he filed a case with the police on May 2, against his neighbour Joynal. Nasir had accused Joynal of taking videos of Nasir’s wife in secret while she was bathing.
According to Nasir’s family members, his wife was raped several times by Joynal, who was blackmailing her with threats of releasing the video footage online.
A few days after Nasir filed the case against Joynal, Joynal filed a case against Nasir, accusing him of stealing money.
Since then, Joynal had been threatening Nasir’s family with driving them away from their home, Nasir’s family complained.
