Amid a series of rape and sexual violence incidents across the country, a four-month pregnant woman has been gang-raped in South Keraniganj, Dhaka.

The survivor has been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for medical examination.

Police have arrested two individuals, Ashraful Islam Siam, 20, and Jeet Sarkar, 19, in connection with the incident.

Confirming the matter to journalists, Inspector Md Mosharraf Hossain Mia, in charge of the Jajira police outpost under South Keraniganj police station, said that the woman was lured with promises of food and shelter and taken to an abandoned house in the Pangao Rishipara area of Keraniganj on Saturday night, where she was gang-raped.

"On Saturday afternoon, the woman arrived in Dhaka from Chandpur on a launch after an argument with her husband. Upon reaching Sadarghat and then Postogola, she was offered food and shelter and taken to an abandoned house, where she was subsequently gang-raped," said Mosharraf Hossain Mia.

He added: "Upon hearing her screams, locals rushed to the scene and caught two of the suspects red-handed before handing them over to the police. A case has been filed against them under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act."

He further said: "Efforts are underway to arrest the remaining two suspects. The survivor has no contact with her family, and her husband's phone is switched off. She has been sent to DMCH for a medical examination and is currently admitted to the One-Stop Crisis Centre (OCC). We are trying to establish contact with her family."
