Rejected AL, JaPa aspirants continue agitations in several districts

Supporters of the nomination seekers of ruling Awami League and its alliance partner Jatiya Party on Tuesday blocked roads and highways with barricades in several districts as their desired candidates did not get party tickets.

In Brahmanbaria, supporters of incumbent lawmaker Ziaul Haque Mridha staged a demonstration blocking the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway for not choosing their leader from the Brahmanbaria-2 constituency.

According to sources, local leaders and activists of Jatiya Party blocked the highway at the Kuttapara intersection for an hour, burning tyres and also chanting slogans against Advocate Rezaul Islam Bhuiyan, nominated from JaPa.

They gave ultimatum to cancel the nomination of outsiders within 24 hours. Otherwise, they will go for tougher movement.

Rezaul Islam is the voter of the Brahmanbaria 2 constituency.

His father-in-law Mridha took part in 2008 election and won. Again he won election in 2014 from JaPa.

In Feni, supporters of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's former Protocol Officer Alauddin Ahmed Chowdhury, staged demonstration blocking the Feni-Parshuram Highway for not choosing their leader from the Feni 1 constituency.

For 3 hours, burning tyres and chanting slogans, hundreds of Awami League men blocked the highway protesting the nomination against Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal Secretary Shirin Akter MP.

They gave an ultimatum to cancel the nomination of outsiders soon; else they will go for tougher movement including hartals.

Parshuram Upazila Chairman Kamal Uddin Majumder and Chagonaya Upazila Chairman Mezbah Ul Haider Chowdhury spoke on the occasion.

In Sherpur, an Awami League nomination aspirant for the Sherpur 1 constituency began a fast unto death program in the afternoon demanding the cancellation of nomination of ruling party whip Atiqur Rahman Atiq.

According to sources, the aggrieved, Sanwar Hossain, incumbent chairman of the Sadar upazila, along with his followers staged demonstrations wearing burial shrouds in the street in front of the Kharampur Food warehouse in Sherpur town and started a fast unto death.

He alleged that nominated Atiq is a corrupt person and womanizer. People will not accept his nomination. People will stay on the street until his nomination is withdrawn, he added.

In Narsingdi, hundreds of supporters of AH Ohidul Haque Aslam Sunny blocked the Dhaka-Narsingdi Highway for three hours demanding nomination from the Narsingdi 4 constituency where the Awami League already nominated Nurul Majid Ahmed Humayun.

They put a barricade on the road around 9:00am in the Baroicha bus stand area on the highway causing a four-kilometre gridlock, Zaved Mahmud, officer-in-charge of Belabo police station, said.

According to the police official, the supporters of Aslam Sunny staged a peaceful demonstration blocking the highway with no untoward incidents taking place.

The agitating supporters alleged that Majid Ahmed Humayun does not have any acceptance among locals.

In the evening, some Awami League activists were critically injured during a clash over the nomination between two groups in the Belabo cattle market of the district.

Belabo Upazila Nirbahi Officer Umme Habiba visited the spot.
