Heavy tailback on Meghna-Gumti Bridge

Both sides of the Meghna-Gumti Bridge, located along the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, are suffering heavy tailbacks.

Torrential rain over the last few days has caused holes to appear at the foundation of the bridge and forced traffic on the bridge to slow—to prevent  accidents.

Thousands of vehicles have been stuck for hours on a 20 km stretch of road, which includes the Meghna Bridge area, from Daudkandi to Gauripur.

Daudkandi police station Officer-in-Charge Abul Kalam Azad confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune on Thursday, saying: “Traffic is passing slowly on the Meghna-Gumti Bridge due to torrential rain for the last few days.

“A few holes have also formed at the bridge’s foundation. The highway police are making a serious effort to ease the traffic jam.”

Meanwhile, speaking to the correspondent, a passenger of a Dhaka-bound bus Mizanur Rahman said: “I was completely stuck on the highway for two hours. I have no idea when we will reach Dhaka.”

The driver of a truck carrying vegetables, Biplob Mia, said: “It took me five hours to traverse the 20-kilometer stretch of road, as I was stuck in Madanpur area of Narayanganj.

“The owner of these vegetables will suffer losses if I do not get to Dhaka soon.”
