A Biman flight from London, with 420 passengers on board, that was warned of a potential terror threat landed safely at Osmani International Airport in Sylhet on Thursday morning.
Security forces conducted a thorough search of the plane with dog squad but found nothing suspicious. Later, the flight was sent to Dhaka without any passengers.
Osmani International Airport Chief Security Officer Nazrul Islam said: “Due to threat anticipation, the whole plane was searched with the help of a dog squad. We did not find anything to warrant a terrorist threat. We evacuated the flight and sent it to Dhaka.”
Flight BG-202 landed around 10:25am. It was supposed to take off for Dhaka at 11:20am but due to security reasons, it left Sylhet around 1:50pm on Thursday.
A source from the airport said that the passengers were evacuated after the plane landed. The plane, as well as the luggage, was thoroughly searched.
Passengers, who were supposed to land in Dhaka, were sent there via a Jeddah-bound flight. The domestic passengers were sent on a different flight.
The source said that the Boeing-777 of Biman Bangladesh Airlines took off from Heathrow around 7pm. An hour later, when the flight was passing over Frankfurt, the London air traffic control told the pilot that there could be a 'suicide attacker' and bomb on the plane.
After discussing with First Officer Arif, flight captain Ismail informed cabin crew chief purser Dolly. The crew was directed to closely monitor the passengers.
Captain Ismail also informed senior Biman officials about the situation via air traffic control.
It was initially decided that the flight would land in Dhaka instead of Sylhet, but later the plane was directed to Osmani airport.
