The case filed over the murder of Buet student Abrar Fahad has been moved to the Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal 1 from the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court.
Law Minister Anisul Huq approved the file on this on Thursday, in line with the powers cleared by Section 6 of the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act 2002, according to a ministry press release.
The ministry's Public Relation Officer Rezaul Karim also confirmed the matter.
Earlier, Abrar's family had called on the law minister and urged him to move the murder case to the Speedy Trial Tribunal for its quick disposal.
Abrar, 22, was found dead on a staircase of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology’s (Buet) Sher-e-Bangla Hall in the early hours of October 7 last year.
He was taken to the dormitory’s Room No 2011 around 8pm on October 6 and beaten mercilessly to death by a group of leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Buet unit late into the night.
The next day, Abrar’s father Barkat Ullah filed the murder case at Chawkbazar police station against 19 people.
The brutal murder had led general students of Buet to demonstrate and shut down the university for months, demanding immediate expulsion of the killers, and their arrest and punishment.
On November 13, police the charge sheet in court accusing 25 Buet students, mostly Chhatra League men.
Buet on November 21 also expelled 26 students, meeting the protesters demand.
On January 13 this year, the case’s trial was shifted to the Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judge's Court.
