Covid-19: Bangladesh logs 16 deaths, 1,595 new infections in a day

The health authorities have reported 16 deaths from the coronavirus on Tuesday, taking the overall fatality in the country to 28,990.

The caseload rose by 1,595 in the 24 hours to 8am to stand at 1,936,837, according to figures released by the health directorate.

A total of 23,547 samples were tested during the same time for a positivity rate of 6.77%.

Another 8,357 people recovered from the disease, taking the total recovery to 1,771,615.

The latest figures put the mortality rate at 1.5% while recovery at 91.47%.

The latest data took the country’s Covid death toll to 28,990, the total caseload to 1,936,837, and the total number of recoveries to 1,771,615. 

Among the 16 new deceased, seven were men and nine were women. All of them died while undergoing treatment at hospitals.

Eight deaths were reported in Dhaka Division alone, three in Chittagong, two in Rajshahi and one each in Khulna, Sylhet and Rangpur.

The country has been witnessing a downtrend in terms of infections for the last 15 days straight.

The infection rate in the country on Friday dipped below 10% for the first time since the surge in Covid-19 cases at the turn of the year.

Meanwhile, the government lifted the Covid-19 restrictions, imposed last month amid Omicron fears, from Tuesday. However, people will have to continue wearing masks outdoor as per the latest decision.

On January 28, Bangladesh logged its earlier highest daily positivity rate at 33.37% reporting 15,440 cases and 20 deaths.

Besides, the country registered the highest daily caseload of 16,230 on July 28 last year, while the highest number of daily fatalities was 264 on August 10 last year.

Bangladesh reported its first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus later named Sars-CoV-2, on March 8, 2020. The first death was reported 10 days later.

A large number of the population has also been vaccinated, with the country crossing the landmark of administering 100 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines on December 1, nearly 10 months after launching a nationwide campaign.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has so far claimed over 5.9 million lives and infected over 426 million people throughout the world, according to Worldometer.

More than 354 million people have recovered from the disease, which has affected 223 countries and territories across the planet.
