Covid-19 infections have increased by 115% in the last one week, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
As of Saturday, 6,3000 cases have been recorded which is 3,376 more than last week, DGHS Director (Disease Control) Nazmul Islam said during a media call on Sunday.
In the last one week, 23 people died of the disease, which is 15% more than the previous week, he added.
Covid-19 infections have been rising with Bangladesh recording 1,491 cases in the 24 hours to 8am on Sunday.
The daily positivity rate which remained well below two percent till the end of December has stood at 6.78%.
According to Nazmul Islam, the last 30 days have seen an upward trend in infections and the situation is becoming critical throughout the world.
Moreover, the Omicron variant has spread significantly in Europe, he added.
Responding to queries on Omicron infections in Bangladesh, Nazmul said that many of the patients are doing well.
“It is important to consult a doctor on time so that it can be treated,” he said before adding there are 4, 616 seats dedicated for Covid patients in Dhaka hospitals and 188 hospitals in the country are equipped with a central oxygen supply system.
The DGHS official pressed the importance of wearing masks and adhering to health guidelines in order to reduce infections.
