Bangladesh's daily Covid deaths fall to 114, a nearly two-month low

The single-day Covid-19 death toll in Bangladesh dropped to its lowest in nearly two months, with the health authorities reporting 114 fatalities in the 24 hours to 8am on Tuesday.

The latest single-day death toll is the lowest since June 29, when the country registered 112 deaths. On June 30, the daily Covid-19 death toll was 115.

The caseload jumped by 5,249 during the same time, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

As many as 34,708 samples were tested across the country, yielding a positivity rate of 15.12%.

With the latest development, the total number of deaths reached 25,513, while the number of total infections rose to 1,472,964 in the country.

On the other hand, another 8,907 patients recovered from the infectious disease across the country, taking the total number of recoveries to 1,381,763.

The seven-day moving average of daily deaths in Bangladesh declined further to 138 on Tuesday.

For a seven-day moving average, one has to take the data of the previous one week, add them up, and divide it by seven. The most common application of a moving average is to identify the direction of the trend.

In terms of deaths per division, Dhaka logged the highest with 42 fatalities, followed by Chittagong with 29.

Khulna division counted 13 deaths while Sylhet counted nine, Rajshahi and Rangpur six each, Barisal five, and Mymensingh four.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.73%.

Dhaka also logged the highest number of cases among the divisions with 2,960 new infections, followed by Chittagong with 1,029.

To date, more than 8.72 million tests have been conducted around the country, leading to an overall test positivity rate of 16.89%.

The health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus named Sars-CoV-2, on March 8, 2020.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 4.4 million lives and had infected over 213 million people across the world till Tuesday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 191.069 million people have recovered from Covid-19, which has spread to 220 countries and territories across the planet.
