Much to the relief of the general people, the daily Covid-19 caseload never crossed the grim 1,000 mark in Bangladesh from January 1 till Wednesday.
Bangladesh today registered 17 deaths from the deadly virus in the past 24 hours and with the latest development, the total number of deaths reached 7,687.
The country also logged a total of 518,898 coronavirus cases with 978 people testing positive over the same period.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country with a press release on Wednesday.
Of the 17 deceased – 15 men and two women – nine were from Dhaka division; two each from Chittagong, Rajshahi, and Rangpur; and one each from Khulna and Mymensingh divisions.
All 17 of the victims died at different hospitals across the country.
So far, 5,846 men (76.05%) and 1,841 women (23.95%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.
Since the beginning, 4,232 people have died in Dhaka division, 1,420 in Chittagong, 443 in Rajshahi, 538 in Khulna, 238 in Barisal, 294 in Sylhet, 348 in Rangpur, and 174 in Mymensingh.
The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.48%.
The health authorities said 1,021 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.
So far, 463,480 patients – 89.32% – have made full recovery across the country.
Lowest infection rate in nearly 9 months
As many as 15,544 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 181 authorized labs – government and private – across the country.
The latest figures show an infection rate of 6.29% – the lowest since April 12 as the previous lowest rate of 6.08% was recorded on the day before. The overall infection rate of the country stands at 15.71%.
It is to be noted that Bangladesh has been recording single-digit test-positivity rates since December 20, last year – a trend sparking hope in the second year of the pandemic. The country had never witnessed such low number of cases since April 9, when the figures for the first time went double-digit.
Meanwhile, total 11,271 people are currently in isolation and 38,494 are quarantined.
On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.
The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December, 2019, and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
Global situation
The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 1,879,000 lives and infected over 86,983,000 people across the world till Wednesday evening, according to worldometer.
As many as 61,685,000 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 220 countries and territories across the planet.
The US has recorded the most cases since the start of the pandemic with 21,579,641 followed by India with 10,375,478 and Brazil with 7,812,007.
Meanwhile, as many as 365,664 people died from Covid-19 so far in the US.
Brazil has the world's second-highest Covid-19 death toll, after the United States, and the third-largest outbreak, after the US and India.
Brazil reported 197,777 deaths from Covid-19 while the death toll in India reached 150,151.
