Bangladesh has registered 20 deaths from Covid-19 in the 24 hours to Tuesday morning. With the latest development, the total number of deaths reached 7,670 in the country.
The country also logged a total of 517,920 coronavirus cases with 991 people testing positive over the same period.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country with a press release on Tuesday.
Of the 20 deceased – 16 men and four women – 14 were from Dhaka division, two each from Chittagong and Mymensingh, and one each from Khulna and Sylhet divisions.
Of the victims, 19 died at different hospitals and one at home.
So far, 5,831 men (76.03%) and 1,839 women (23.97%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.
Since the beginning, 4,223 have died in Dhaka division, 1,418 in Chittagong, 441 in Rajshahi, 537 in Khulna, 238 in Barisal, 294 in Sylhet, 346 in Rangpur, and 173 in Mymensingh.
The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.48%.
The health authorities said 944 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.
So far, 462,459 patients – 89.29% – have made full recovery across the country.
As many as 14,462 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 180 authorized labs -- government and private -- across the country.
The latest figures show an infection rate of 6.85%. The overall infection rate of the country stands at 15.76%.
Currently, 11,312 people are in isolation and 38,619 are quarantined.
On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.
The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December, 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
Global situation
The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 1,862,862 lives and infected 86,186,625 people across the world till Tuesday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
As many as 61,164,999 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 220 countries and territories across the planet.
The US has recorded the most cases since the start of the pandemic with 21,353,051 followed by India with 10,357,569 and Brazil with 7,754,560.
Meanwhile, as many as 362,123 people died from Covid-19 so far in the US.
Brazil has the world's second-highest Covid-19 death toll, after the United States, and the third-largest outbreak, after the US and India.
Brazil reported 196,591 deaths from Covid-19 while death toll in India reached 149,886.
