Covid-19: Bangladesh records 19 deaths in 24 hours, another 1,733 test positive

Bangladesh recorded 19 more deaths from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, taking the number of recorded coronavirus fatalities to 6,127.

The country also logged more than 425,000 coronavirus cases with 1,733 people having tested positive over the same period.

With this development, the number of all confirmed cases so far jumped to 425,353.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country with a press release on Wednesday.

Of the 19 deceased, including 16 men, 15 were from Dhaka division, three from Chittagong, and one from Rangpur division.

So far, 4,719 men (77.02%) and 1,408 women (22.98%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.44%.

The DGHS said 14,687 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients in the last 24 hours.

As many as 14,524 samples were tested in the 115 authorized labs -- government and private -- across the country and 1,733 new patients were confirmed.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 11.93%.

 To date, 2,484,688 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 17.12% so far.

The health authorities said 1,715 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 343,131 patients — 80.67% of all infected — have made full recovery across the country.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 1,281,129 lives and infected 51,897,456 people across the world till Wednesday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 36,449,304 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 217 countries and territories across the planet.
