Acting Foreign Secretary: No discussion on visa policy with US official Rena Bitter

Acting Foreign Secretary Rear Admiral (Retd) Md Khurshed Alam on Sunday said the US side did not discuss anything related to the recently announced US visa policy.

"I can unequivocally tell you that they did not initiate any discussion about the visa policy," he told reporters after his meeting with US Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Rena Bitter.

He said the visit was part of a regular engagement and she did not come to discuss any specific issue. 

Visiting US Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Rena Bitter met Acting Foreign Secretary Rear Admiral (Retd) Md Khurshed Alam on Sunday and discussed consular related issues.

Increased interest in student visas, consular assistance to American citizens, and US efforts to reduce visa interview wait times were some of the topics discussed by the Assistant Secretary, the embassy said in a statement titled “US study and travel are booming”.

Ambassador Peter Haas was also present.

Rena Bitter arrived in Dhaka for a two-day visit on Sunday.

Before her arrival, he visited Islamabad and Karachi in Pakistan.

The assistant secretary will meet with embassy and consulate staff and observe consular operations, the US Department of State, earlier, said.

“Her trip underscores our deep and sustained commitment to the protection of US citizens overseas and the facilitation of legitimate travel and immigration to the United States,” said a spokesperson for the US Department of State.
