New Covid variant: Akhaura port takes preventive measures

Akhaura land port authorities have taken additional cautionary measures to prevent the spread of Omicron BF7, a new sub-variant of Covid-19.

The health screening program of passengers coming from India through this check post has been strengthened, said the authorities.

Necessary health checkups are being done with thermal scanners and infrared thermometers, they said.

Besides, rapid antigen test system has been kept ready for suspected passengers.

Rapid antigen test was done on 10 suspected Indian nationals till Tuesday noon.

However, the health authorities said that all their reports came back negative.

Moreover, all health-related information of all passengers coming from India is recorded in the prescribed form.

Dr Rahat Raihan, health officer at Akhaura land port, said maximum precautionary measures have been taken on the instructions of the Ministry of Health.

“No suspected passengers were given permission to enter the country without being tested,” he said.

“The immigration authorities are more careful than before to prevent the new variant of coronavirus. Passengers are also being made aware of this,” said Swapan Chandra Das, immigration in-charge of Akhaura land port.

On Sunday, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) directed all ports -- land, air, and sea -- of Bangladesh to increase screening and precautionary measures to prevent the spread of Omicron BF7.

They also advised the public to take again precautions against Covid-19, including getting vaccinated and wearing masks in crowds as the new variant of the Coronavirus is more contagious than the previous ones.

China has already been battered with the new variant of the virus and cases of the same variant have been detected in India.
