Queen Maxima arrives in Dhaka on a four-day visit

Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, who is UN secretary general's special advocate for inclusive finance for development, has arrived in Dhaka.

She has come to Bangladesh to promote people's access to financial services, reports UNB.

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen received the Dutch queen at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Tuesday evening.

During her visit, the Dutch queen will discuss, in particular, how to improve women's access to financial services.

She is also set to focus on discussing ways of digitalizing salary payments, and supporting women entrepreneurs, among other topics.

She will also highlight the importance of introducing a national identity system and its link to digital payment platforms.

The Bangladeshi National Strategy for Inclusive Finance (NFIS) is also included in her agenda.

Queen Maxima is set to meet development partners and representatives of the financial technology sector at the local UN office on Wednesday.

She will then visit a representative of iPay, which has developed the iPay e-wallet that customers can install on their smartphones to make online payments.

The queen's last visit will be to ShopUp, a Facebook-based fintech business that helps small enterprises to sell their products.

Queen Maxima will participate in a round-table meeting with private sector representatives and have a series of meetings with Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir, Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology (ICT) Minister Mustafa Jabbar, and a delegation from the Ministry of Finance.

The Dutch queen will also meet President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to discuss inclusive finance and the NFIS on Thursday and Wednesday, respectively.

Queen Maxima was appointed the UN secretary-general’s special advocate in 2009, and visited Bangladesh in that capacity in November 2015.

She has also been an honorary patron of the G20 Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion (GPFI) since 2011.

She will leave Dhaka on Friday.
