Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda has said using EVMs will prevent 80% of irregularities in the upcoming general election.
He made the statement while speaking to journalists at the Election Commission Secretariat on Thursday morning.
He gave an example of the 2014 election-time violence, when police, presiding officers, magistrates, and scores of people were killed, with many educational institutions, which were used as voting centres, set on fire.
"We could not control the violence during the last national election, but we have to make sure it is not repeated," said the CEC, anticipating the possibility of violence during election.
"We hope we will be able to fight all of these issues with experience, professionalism, skill, and mentally-strong staff," added the CEC.
He said: "We cannot ignore the possibilities of violence. The day after we allocated symbols, two incidents took place. No matter how small those incidents were, two people lost their lives. We have to ensure that there are no political or social reasons behind this, and no conspiracy is going to to make it like the 2014 polls,"
Huda also said the Election Commission is at the last stage of election preparation. "We have finished 95% preparation," said the CEC.
