Former chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda has said the Election Commission headed by Kazi Habibul Awal is on the right track.
On a talk show hosted by a private television channel on Saturday night, KM Nurul Huda said the commission is working hard to ensure that the election is impartial.
“The Election Commission should have widespread support,” he said.
The former CEC further stated that while there were allegations of “nighttime voting in 2018, neither the Election Commission nor any aggrieved person or party filed a complaint with the High Court at the time.
He also pointed out that legally there was no opportunity to investigate them on the commission’s own initiative.
Another former election commissioner, Brigadier General (retd) M Sakhawat Hussain said there is no way to avoid the perception created about nighttime voting. He also claimed that many people in the government party are admitting that recently.
He said he believes the commission faces a significant task in keeping the election legitimate and violence-free in the midst of the exclusion of a major party, referring to the BNP.
Former CEC KM Nurul Huda was questioned about the alleged nighttime polling in 2018 on the talk show.
In response, he said the commission is responsible for conducting the election, and if there were any irregularities, the aggrieved person or political party might have sought justice at the High Court. In this instance, if the claims are found genuine based on evidence, the court might declare the losing candidate the winner and overturn the winning candidate’s victory.
In this case, the entire country's election could possibly be cancelled, he said. However, it is unclear whether any party or individual has sought justice. “They have not sought justice, as far as I know.”
