The School of Data and Sciences (SDS) is going to hold the Jamal Nazrul Islam Memorial Winter School 2025, said a press release on Saturday.
The program is entirely tuition-free, with accommodation and meals provided for all selected participants.
The pre-school will be held at Brac University’s Merul Badda campus from January 19–23, 2025, and the main residential school will take place at the Savar campus from January 28 to February 3, 2025.
Advanced undergraduate and graduate students across Bangladesh are encouraged to apply by Wednesday, the release added.
It said that a vision for a "New Bangladesh" is incomplete without a bold and ambitious commitment to theoretical sciences.
Building a future-ready nation requires investment in technical education, fostering local talent, and creating an environment conducive to scholarly pursuits.
Brac University, therefore, is striving to meet this challenge head-on and aspires to become a knowledge hub for the Global South.
As part of this vision, the School of Data and Sciences (SDS) is holding the event.
This initiative is a collaborative effort with the Unesco Category 1 research institute, the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), under its flagship outreach program Physics Without Frontiers.
The program is named in honor of Professor Jamal Nazrul Islam, a pioneer in Bangladesh’s scientific community.
Prof Islam left a promising career in the UK to build a science infrastructure in Bangladesh, and his research on the mathematical structure of the universe and its ultimate fate continues to inspire scholars worldwide.
For the first time, a fully residential winter school on mathematical and theoretical physics will bring together students and leading researchers from around the world.
This intensive residential training program is designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate students with research interests in Quantum Field Theory, Cosmology, Black Holes, and Geometry.
SDS Dean Prof Mahbub Majumdar said: “This is something that has been in the making for 20 years. The goal of this school will be to make the pathway into research for people interested in black holes, cosmology and mathematical physics much easier. This will be an extremely exciting event with leaders in their fields training our students and young researchers.”
