Banning campus politics: Buet students vow to continue protest

The agitating students have vowed to continue their protest on the campus of Bangladesh University of Engineering (Buet) to keep student politics banned.

The students claimed that the Buet environment is safe and education-friendly without student politics.

On their behalf, the students urged the Buet Vice-Chancellor to file an appeal against the High Court's verdict.

The protesting students said these things at a press conference in front of the MA Rashid administration building of Buet on Monday afternoon.

In a press conference regarding the High Court's suspension of the notice banning student politics of Buet, they said: "We students of Buet have full respect and trust on the judicial system of the country."

Despite student politics being banned inside the Buet campus, the arrival and showdown of external political figures on the campus at midnight on March 28 was considered a violation of university rules by the general students of Buet.

They said that after the murder of Abrar Fahad on October 7, 2019, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said in a press conference at Ganabhaban on October 9 that doing politics is prohibited in many institutions if Buet thinks they can ban it.

Demanding the Buet administration to present the opinion of all the students to the judicial department, it was said in the press conference: “We are united and resolute about the rationale of our demand that there should be no student politics in the campus. A student politics that fosters ragging culture, paves the way for abuse of power, and sacrifices innocent students, has never brought us anything good, and will never bring us anything good. The atmosphere of Buet without student politics was extremely safe and educationally friendly. We can also stop the radical forces unitedly.”

Urging the VC to fulfill the desire for a politics-free campus through the legal process, the press conference said: "We have confidence in our VC Sir. We the students are requesting our VC Sir to fulfill the desire of all teachers and students for a campus free from student politics through all the legal processes.”

On Thursday, a group of Chhatra League leaders and activists entered the Buet campus under the leadership of its top leaders. In protest, Buet students initiated a movement on Friday.

During this time, the students presented a six-point demand, including enforcing the ban on student politics on campus.

Later, the Buet administration partially accepted the students' demands and published a notice. The notice signed by Buet Registrar Prof Dr Md Forkan Uddin said the cancellation of the accused student Imtiaz Hossain Rahim Rabbi's dormitory seat, formation of an investigation committee, and decisions to be taken according to the investigation while ensuring that all academic activities, including exams, would continue as scheduled.

Student political activities were prohibited at Buet following the murder of Abrar Fahad by Chhatra League members in the university's Sher-e-Bangla Hall on October 7, 2019.
