CU VC sued for making derogatory comments

Prof Gazi Saleh Uddin, a teacher at Sociology Department of the university, filed the case against the VC with a court of Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) yesterday over making the comment about him, terming him a fake freedom fighter. Prof Iftekhar made the comment on November 28 in a commemorative meeting of former VC late prof Abu Yusuf, according to the case statement. Defence lawyer Mujibor Rahman Chowdhury told the Dhaka Tribune: “Taking the case into cognizance, the court directed the deputy commissioner of Detective Branch, Chittagong Metropolitan Police, to submit a report in this regard within 30 days.” Prof Iftekhar told Dhaka Tribune: “I will fight the legal battle.” However, he refuted the allegation brought by Prof Saleh Uddin in the case. Prof Saleh Uddin mentioned in the case statement that his father Ali Karim, a former railway official, was murdered by Pakistani occupational force on November 10 in 1971. Prof Saleh Uddin fought for the country under Sector Two in the liberation War and his freedom fighter’s certificates numbers are “BMS-27910” signed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and “M-6056” issued by the ministry of Liberation War Affairs, as mentioned in the case statement. Besides, Prof Saleh Udin’s two brothers Gazi Mesbah Uddin and Gazi Samsuddin were also freedom fighters, while a commemorative postal stamp was also released by Bangladesh Postal Department in the name of his father, said the case statement.
