Four people sustained burn injuries in a gas cylinder explosion at a cylinder re-testing facility in Gazipur on Wednesday night. One of them is in critical condition.
The injured were taken to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka for treatment.
The incident occurred around 8:30pm at United Cylinder Re-testing Centre-2 in the Naojor area of Gazipur city, near Riaz Filling Station.
The victims were identified as Ahad, 19, Abdullah, 18, Ashraful, 26, and Naim, 25.
According to doctors, Ahad suffered burns to 55% of his body, Abdullah 20%, Ashraful 15% and Naim 4%.
Ahad, Abdullah and Ashraful have been admitted to the hospital's High Dependency Unit (HDU), while Naim is under observation in the emergency department. Ahad's condition is critical.
Hiron Mia, senior station officer at Gazipur-Chourasta Modern Fire Station, said a fire broke out in a cylinder at the facility around 8:40pm.
Two Fire Service units reached the scene at 8:44pm, brought the fire under control by 8:50pm and fully extinguished it by 9:30pm, he said.
A preliminary assessment suggested that the fire was caused by a gas leak from a filled cylinder, Hiron added. He said firefighters initially received reports of two people being injured, but found no injured people at the scene when they arrived.
Talha Bin Jasim, a member of the Fire Service and Civil Defence media cell, later confirmed that four people had sustained burn injuries and were receiving treatment at the burn institute.
Citing Sultan Mahmud Sikdar, a resident surgeon in the hospital's emergency department, Talha provided details of the victims' burn injuries and their treatment.
