A legal notice has been sent to Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), seeking steps to ensure uninterrupted mobile network and call services on metro rail and at stations in Dhaka.
Advocate H M Rashidul Islam Rashed, general secretary of the BUBT Lawyers Association (BULA), sent the notice in the public interest on Wednesday.
Addressed to the managing director of DMTCL, the notice asked the company to allow the country’s 3 major mobile operators — Grameenphone, Banglalink and Robi Axiata (Airtel) — to install mobile network infrastructure in metro rail areas and provide necessary infrastructural facilities.
According to the notice, around 400,000 passengers use the metro rail every day. However, weak or unavailable network services on moving trains and at stations prevent passengers from making emergency calls, while other calls may be disconnected.
The notice requested that necessary steps be taken within 15 days of receiving it and that the sender be informed in writing.
Otherwise, it said legal measures, including filing a writ petition before the High Court in the public interest, would be taken.
