Two members of police were injured in a knife attack by suspected muggers in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area Thursday mid-night, police said.
The injured policemen were identified as sub-inspector (Unarmed) Shamsuzzohha, 34, and constable Mohammad Hridoy Hossain, 20.
The incident took place around 1:00am near the Glass Bridge area of Zia Udyan. According to police, a patrol team was pursuing a group of suspected muggers who were attempting to flee in an auto-rickshaw after committing a robbery. During the chase, the suspects allegedly attacked two police members riding a motorcycle with sharp weapons.
Both policemen sustained stab wounds to their left shoulders. They were initially taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital before being transferred to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DNCH) at around 2:30am for advanced treatment.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Momin of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station said the injured policemen are currently undergoing treatment.
Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of the police camp at DMCH, confirmed that both police members suffered stab injuries to their left shoulders and were receiving treatment at the hospital’s emergency department.
Police said the suspects involved in the attack have been arrested and legal proceedings are underway.
