A technical fault in the body preservation system at the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) has created a critical situation, officials have said.
Authorities reported that a sudden malfunction in the 40-capacity mortuary unit has disrupted the storage of bodies. In addition, five older mortuary units which had long been in use, have remained out of order for years. The breakdown of the morgue’s air-conditioning system has further worsened the situation, causing a foul odour to spread throughout the facility.
At present, seven bodies are being kept in the morgue and are scheduled to be handed over to Anjuman Mufidul Islam for burial on Thursday. In the past three days, the organisation has already received 18 bodies for burial.
Confirming the matter, Dr Kazi Golam Moklesur Rahman, head of the Forensic Department at Dhaka Medical College, said the malfunction in the currently used mortuary unit has created difficulties in preserving bodies. He added that .
He expressed hope that repair work would be completed soon.
He also noted that the five older mortuary units have remained non-functional for years and were already out of service before he assumed his current responsibility.
