DU implements new measures to enhance campus security

In a move to enhance security across the University of Dhaka (DU) campus, the university administration has announced a set of new measures.

As part of this initiative, a constant police presence has been ensured from Wednesday at key locations including the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) and the VC Chattar.

In addition, joint patrols by the proctorial team and police will continue on the main roads of the campus.

According to a press release issued by the university’s Public Relations Office, the decisions were made during a meeting held on Wednesday, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan.

The meeting focused on the overall security situation of the campus.

Law enforcement officials briefed the university administration on the current security landscape.

Notably, on June 16, police detained a 19-year-old, Md Tamim during preparations for a political procession for Awami League in the Katabon area.

He was taken on a one-day remand by court order and later sent to jail as an arrestee.

Tamim is reportedly affiliated with Md Asaduzzaman, former commissioner of Ward 21.

Meanwhile, the university has formed an internal investigation committee to probe the recovery of a cocktail-like object near the Shahid Buddhijibe Dr Muhammad Mortaza Medical Centre.

A parallel investigation is also being conducted by the police, who have expressed hope that the perpetrators will be apprehended soon.

In another development, a General Diary (GD) was filed with Shahbagh police station regarding the setting off of firecrackers near the Raju Sculpture on Tuesday.

CCTV footage has been handed over to the police.

Both law enforcement agencies and university authorities are working jointly to identify and arrest those responsible.

Additionally, in a separate meeting held the same day, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan and DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali discussed the campus security situation and outlined future action plans.

Meanwhile, police have reported that the investigation into the killing of DU student Shahriar Alam Shammo is nearing completion, and the charge sheet will be submitted shortly.

Progress is also being made in the trial process of the Tofazzal murder case.

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has nearly completed its probe and the hearing of the case has been scheduled for July 24, confirmed the Public Relations Office.
