Mob leaves Shahbagh police station as man accused of harassment sent to court

A mob demanding the release of Mostafa Asif, an assistant binder at the Dhaka University (DU) central library accused of harassing a female student, left the Shahbagh police station premises as he was taken to court on Thursday.

According to reports, Asif was taken into custody on Wednesday evening after the victim filed a complaint.

Later that night, a mob identifying itself as Touhidi Janata arrived at the police station, demanding his release.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khalid Mansur confirmed the development.

A duty officer at Shahbagh police station said: "After Mostafa Asif was detained, several individuals came to the station around midnight. They chanted slogans and attempted to have him released. However, they did not engage in aggressive behaviour. Once we sent the accused to court, they left the premises, vacating the station around 9:30am."

Regarding a Facebook Live video streamed while the accused was in custody, OC Khalid clarified: "Many people gathered in an attempt to have Mostafa Asif released. Some even approached the area where he was being held. It is possible that someone from that group made a call and started a live stream. The accused himself did not initiate the broadcast using his phone."

The allegations against Asif emerged after a DU student reported being harassed while returning from Shahbagh.

She shared her account on social media, along with a photo of the accused, saying: "This man harassed me today on my way back from Shahbagh. He suddenly stopped me on the road and told me that my dress was inappropriate, that I was not wearing a veil, and so on.

"His behaviour was extremely aggressive. When I asked him which hall he lived in and which department he studied in, he said he was not a student of this campus."

Following her complaint, the student initially reported the incident to the Dhaka University Proctor’s Office before filing a case at Shahbagh police station.
