Students from Dhaka College and City College engaged in intermittent clashes on Wednesday afternoon in the Science Lab intersection area, leaving at least 32 people injured.
Injured students were later taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of the DMCH Police Camp, said: "Many injured students from the Dhaka College-City College clash came to Dhaka Medical. Some left after receiving treatment, while others are still under care."
To control the situation, law enforcement fired tear gas. Both groups retreated after interventions by the police and army, though tensions remain high in the area.
The altercation started on Wednesday around 2:30pm.
Earlier, classes at City College resumed on Wednesday after being suspended for several days due to student protests.
Meanwhile, Dhaka College students staged demonstrations demanding the resignation of teachers allegedly complicit with authoritarian practices.
The clash erupted when some Dhaka College students vandalized a bus in the Science Lab area.
This led to heated arguments and escalated into a physical altercation with City College students.
Upon receiving news of the clash, police and army personnel arrived to control the situation.
They used tear gas and sound grenades to disperse the groups.
