New Market reopened

The main part of Dhaka's New Market was reopened on Sunday morning following Saturday's announcement that it would be closed until further notice because of a devastating fire at the nearby New Supermarket that ravaged over 1,000 shops.

Gausia Market, Nurjahan Market and Globe Shopping Mall have also been open since the morning.

Hawkers were also seen setting up stalls in rows on the footpath on the east side.

However, Chandrima Supermarket, some parts of the New Market and surrounding areas of the New Supermarket remained closed.

Jahangir Alam, a businessman on the ground floor of Chandrima Market, said they are waiting for the decisions from the owners' committee.

"We will open the market as soon as we receive instructions from them. A committee meeting is currently taking place upstairs," he said.

Ashraf Uddin Ahmed, vice president of the New Market Business Owners Association, said: “There are five separate markets in different blocks here in New Market. Each market has a separate committee and management. The main market opened on Sunday morning. However, it is unknown whether any decisions have been made regarding the opening of other markets."

Earlier, on Saturday morning at 5:40am, the fire service was informed about the fire at New Supermarket. The first firefighting units arrived at the scene at 5:43am. Subsequently, 30 units worked to control the fire. The fire was under control by 9:10am.

The fire was completely extinguished by 9am on Sunday.
