Rapid Action Battalion chief M Khurshid Hossain has said the special police unit is concerned by some recent incidents, including Tuesday's explosion in Dhaka's Gulistan, and growing suspicious of them.
The RAB director general was speaking to reporters late on Tuesday during his visit to Dhaka Medical College Hospital's emergency unit, where many of the victims of the blast were undergoing treatment.
“The Fire Service is working at the site of the explosion in Siddikbazar. RAB's bomb disposal team and the army are also there. They are all searching the basement for any evidence [of sabotage],” Khurshid told the media.
Officials had yet to reach the basement of the six-storey building where the explosion had occurred, he said.
“Several incidents have occurred recently, and they are extremely worrying. RAB's intelligence team has already started working to find out whether there is any case of sabotage. We can provide a clear answer after investigation,” the RAB chief added.
He also asked Dhaka residents not to panic over these incidents.
“We obviously say anything for certain without investigation, but [the recent incidents] seem suspicious to us,” Khurshid said.
The explosion on Tuesday afternoon has so far claimed the lives of 17 people.
Officials fear the death toll will likely increase as many of those rescued are critically injured.
