2 more doctors die of Covid-19

Two more doctors, one from Bangladesh Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and another from the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, have died of Covid-19.

Gazi Zahirul Hasan, a professor of the Paediatric Surgery department of BSMMU died undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Friday.

DMCH Doctor Mosaddek Hossain confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

“Dr Zahirul breathed his last around 1:15am on Friday in the intensive care unit (ICU) of DMCH,” said Dr Nirupam Das, chief administrator of Bangladesh Doctors’ Foundation.

“His symptoms manifested 15 days ago and he was admitted to DMCH on June 5,” Nirupam said.

BSMMU Vice Chancellor (VC), Professor Kanak Kanti Barua, told this correspondent that Dr Zahirul was suffering from diabetes, blood pressure, and kidney problems for a long time.

Dr Zahirul called the VC last Friday and informed him about having tested Covid-19 positive and was later hospitalized in the DMCH Covid-19 unit. A week before that he got treatment from home with Covid-19 symptoms.

“He was a very proficient doctor and made many contributions to medical education. This is a big loss for us,” VC Kanak added.

Zahirul was a 17th batch student of Mymensingh Medical College.

Since our last update, Dr Mahmud Monowar, assistant professor of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases also died of Covid-19 around 9:30am on Friday, said Dr Nirupam Das.

National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases Director, Mir Jamal Uddin, said though their institute did not have a Covid-19 unit, Dr Monowar insisted he be treated there.

As he was a physician of this institute, Dr Monowar was admitted to a separate and special intensive care unit (ICU) three days ago. He died there this morning, the director added.
