Coronavirus: DU students demand postponing all academic activities

A group of Dhaka University (DU) students have demanded postponement of all academic activities due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The students formed a human chain at the university's TSC intersection and placed a three-point demand on Sunday.

They also submitted a memorandum to Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman.

The demonstrators said most of the first year students stay in "Gono Rooms," or mass rooms, at all 17 dormitories of the university. These rooms are very unhygienic and around 30 students stay together in each of them.

Their demands also include setting-up of a medical camp to detect coronavirus as soon as possible and ensuring proper treatment of any coronavirus patient.

Shawkat Hossain, one of the students, said: "We urge the VC to postpone all academic activities as he is our supreme guardian here. We want to return to our home."

Condemning the VC's stand on the coronavirus issue, Rihan Ahmed, another student of 2019-20 academic session, said: "Our VC and proctor are making liability-less remarks about our safety and security.

"The situation can be apocalyptic, many students may fall victim to the virus if the university authorities do not suspend academic activities."

On Saturday, three third-year students also went on a hunger strike, on the base of Anti-terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture at TSC intersection, demanding cancellation of all academic and residential activities as fear gripped general students over the global outbreak of coronavirus.

They are KM Tourjo of political science department, Md Zunaed Hossain Khan of psychology department, and Md Hasan Biswas of television, film and photography department.

On Sunday, two other students of the university joined them on the hunger strike.
