An activist of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has allegedly been stabbed by Awami League men in Chawkbazar of Dhaka.
The incident took place in Purba Islambagh area around 7pm on Friday.
The incident occurred only hours before the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) elections, scheduled to get under way on Saturday morning.
The injured is Nazir Hossain Molla, 50, a milk trader by profession.
He is a supporter of Md Shahidul Islam Babul, a BNP-backed councillor candidate of Ward 29 at the DSCC polls.
According to the victim's family, a group of eight to 10 Awami League men, led by Rubel, nephew of ruling party-backed councillor candidate Jahangir Alam, swooped on Nazir and beat him up.
They also stabbed Nazir on the head, back and waist, the family said.
He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).
DMCH police outpost assistant in-charge Abdul Khan said Nazir had been admitted to the hospital with stab injuries and was undergoing treatment there.
