Jailed businessman Giasuddin Al Mamun has been granted parole following the death of his mother.
Mamun will be released for 8 hours starting 10am Thursday, Dhaka Central Jail Jailer Mahabub Alam said on Wednesday.
During the parole, he can only move within the Dhaka Metropolitan Area, the jailer added.
Mamun’s mother Halima Khatun passed away while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka on Wednesday morning, his brother and former BNP MP Hafiz Ibrahim said.
A plea for his parole was subsequently filed by his other brother Jalal Uddin Rumi.
“According to the order we received, he can only stay in the burial area. Once the burial is completed, he will return to the jail in Keraniganj,” Mahabub told Dhaka Tribune.
Mamun, a close business associate of BNP acting chief Tarique Rahman, was sentenced to seven years in prison and fined Tk12 crore in April this year, over charges of money laundering, along with BNP's acting chief Tarique, who is in exile.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) submitted a charge sheet over Mamun for siphoning off £4,18,853 to the UK.
Mamum was arrested on January 31, 2007 during the military-backed caretaker government’s term, and is in jail since then.
There are various cases against him which include extortion, corruption, money laundering and tax evasion.
