The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Mirpur division has arrested five people, including the prime accused Rubel and Bappa alias Shakil, in connection with the attempted murder of BNP activist Alamgir Hossain in the capital’s Pallabi.
The other arrestees are: Hamidur alias Makhon, Parvez and Rabbi.
Mohammad Rakib Khan, deputy commissioner of the DB’s Mirpur division, said the five were arrested during raids in different areas of Savar, Gazipur and Kushtia on Monday.
Police recovered a pistol, two rounds of ammunition, two magazines, a private car allegedly used in the attack and a Volkswagen from their possession. They also recovered 1,000 yaba tablets, he said.
According to Rakib Khan, none of the suspects remained in Dhaka after the shooting. One was first arrested in Gazipur, while the others were later detained in Aminbazar, Savar and Kushtia.
The shooting took place at around 5:45pm last Friday when assailants got out of a private car and opened fire at Alamgir Hossain, 45, in Pallabi. A passerby, Jotsna, was also hit by a bullet.
Alamgir is undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while Jotsna was treated at Kurmitola General Hospital and has since returned home.
Alamgir’s wife filed a case with Pallabi Police Station over the attack, naming Mohammad Rubel as the prime accused.
